Work Education

Definition: Purposeful and meaningful manual work integrated into learning, producing goods or services beneficial to the community while fostering self-fulfillment.

Upper Primary Stage:

  • Learners carry out more complex work requiring neuro-muscular coordination.
  • Activities aim to enhance:
    • Nutrition
    • Personal & community health
    • Sanitation
    • Productivity & economic status
  • Activities are structured around:
    1. Observing work situations and identifying tasks
    2. Participating in work situations
    3. Producing articles in larger numbers
  • All activities should remain simple, enjoyable, and practical.

Secondary Stage:

  • Increased complexity of work while keeping essential nature the same.
  • Pre-vocational courses introduced to prepare students for vocational choices and entry into the world of work.

Art Education

Definition: Development of aesthetic sensibility, creativity, and personality.

Upper Primary Stage:

  • Activities include:
    • Drawing, painting, collage, clay modeling, puppet construction
    • Free expression and structured art tasks
    • Simple musical instruments and sound-producing activities
    • Movement, mime, dance, community singing, theatre arts
    • Stories of great artists and global art traditions
  • Focus on learner imagination, creativity, and sense of design.

Secondary Stage:

  • Refines aesthetic sensibilities and social values.
  • Activities include:
    • Projects leading to creative expression
    • Exhibitions of visual and aural works
    • Inter-school art activities and study trips
    • Interaction with community artists
    • Exploration of traditional art forms
  • Emphasis on integrative approach; art should not be fragmented.

Health and Physical Education

Definition: Concerned with total health (physical, mental, emotional) of learners and community.

Upper Primary Stage:

  • Activities include:
    • Vigorous and rhythmic exercises, gymnastics, athletics, aquatics, yoga
    • Drill, marching, scouting, camping, team games
  • Health education emphasizes:
    • Common health problems, nutrition, safety, sanitation, pollution awareness
    • Breathing exercises and yoga

Secondary Stage (Classes IX–X):

  • Activities include more vigorous physical programs: athletics, major games (including indigenous), gymnastics, yoga, meditation, combatives, swimming.
  • Health education includes:
    • Personal health, environmental pollution, food & nutrition
    • Disease prevention, first aid, home nursing, safety measures
    • Awareness of HIV/AIDS, adolescence education, sex education
    • Addressing child and drug abuse, and risky behaviors
  • Teaching approach:
    • Participation for all learners, no separate classes for health topics
    • Use of age-appropriate self-instructional materials
