Purpose of Guidance: The central aim of guidance is to support individuals in aligning themselves with their abilities, interests, and the expectations of society. In simpler terms, guidance helps a person grow in a positive direction and adapt to the requirements of a changing world.

Purpose of Guidance

At the elementary level, the primary purpose of guidance is to help children bring together the key influences in their lives—home, school, religion, and peer groups. These early influences form the foundation of a child’s personality and later development, and guidance helps students blend these forces into a balanced and healthy whole.

At the secondary school level, guidance becomes more specialized. It focuses on helping adolescents understand how these influences shape their self-knowledge, self-acceptance, and future direction. Here, guidance supports students as they explore educational planning, career choices, interpersonal relationships, and opportunities that match their strengths and aspirations.

Overall, guidance aims to enhance a person’s ability to understand themselves, relate effectively to different situations, and achieve a sense of personal satisfaction while contributing positively to society. This includes students, teachers, parents, and the wider community.

How Guidance Contributes to Students

a) It helps students gain deeper self-understanding by recognizing their abilities, interests, aptitudes, and limitations.

b) It supports them in forming better relationships with others and in understanding the world around them.

c) It enables them to make the most of school life by accessing information about careers, subjects, and opportunities.

d) It encourages them to explore their own strengths, learn about various career fields, and develop their potential to the fullest.

e) It helps identify gifted learners, slow learners, and students with special needs, ensuring that they receive the right support and develop positive attitudes.

How Guidance Supports Teachers

Guidance provides opportunities for teachers to better understand their students through professional development programs led by trained counsellors. Counsellors also assist in test administration and help teachers interpret test results, which contributes to a clearer understanding of students’ behavior and performance.

Through cumulative records maintained by the guidance department, teachers receive valuable information about students’ interests, strengths, backgrounds, health history, academic performance, and personal traits—information that enhances instruction.

Benefits for Parents

Guidance helps parents gain a clearer picture of their child’s abilities, interests, and potential, enabling them to understand and support their child more effectively.

Benefits for the Community

Guidance services contribute to better mental health and social harmony within the community.Benefits for the School as a Whole
